William Alan
Poppe
August 14, 1951 – March 11, 2026
It is with deeply felt love and sorrow that the family of William A. Poppe announce his peaceful passing on March 11, 2026 at the age of 74, in Aurora, while surrounded by family. Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
Bill was the beloved husband of Janet Hargett Poppe. They have been married for over 50 years, and each considered the other "the love of their life" and "best friends forever". He is also the devoted and loving father to Kimberly (James) Mais and Christopher (Diana) Poppe. He also loved his grandchildren Alexis & Isabella Ahlert and Alexander & Lucas Poppe. He was always a role model and provided a home that was fun, safe and welcoming. Bill's sense of humor, kindness and intelligence will be with his family forever.
Bill was born in Washington, D.C. on August 14, 1951 to William A. Poppe and Catharine Harper Poppe. He had an older sister, Catharine Letteney. He grew up in Maryland where he graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering. He met his wife Janet, at his first engineering job in Maryland. His career also took him to Kansas and finally Aurora, Illinois. His whole career was in the nuclear business and he retired after 42 years.
His life revolved around family and work. After he retired, he loved spending more time in the yard - trimming, cutting, mowing, planting and redesigning. He also loved working with numbers, doing accounting, making graphs and watching the stock market. Lastly, he also enjoyed vacationing around the country with his wife.
Bill will always be remembered for his sense of humor, loyalty, his always positive spirit and outlook on life. He wanted a ceremony celebrating his "life"- because he would want us to keep laughing, enjoying our memories of him and taking care of each other. He will forever be missed, forever loved and always remembered. He is in our hearts.
