Sylvia Kay Johnson, age 77 years of Aurora and Oswego, IL died peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Neighbors Next Door in Aurora, IL. Sylvia had lived with her daughter Cheryl (& Ed) for several years until just recently. She was born January 3, 1939 on the family farm in Kewanee, IL., the daughter of the late Harold and Zella (nee Vest) Streicher.
Sylvia had worked in the oncology department at Dreyer Clinic for 18 years until her retirement. During that time she provided care, compassion and hope to everyone she spoke to. She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Oswego, where she was involved in the Council of Catholic Women, a member of the Oswegoland Woman's Civic Club. Sylvia started the Hands of Hope program that is sponsored by the OWCC. She spent many hours collecting items for the gift bags that are given to the patients for comfort while going through treatment. She had previously worked at Arbor Valley in Oswego where she had a real knack for decorating the many Christmas Trees that were on display every year. She also spent many happy hours teaching at New England Congregational Church and St. Luke Preschools. She loved life and had a great sense of humor and she never could pass up a bargain.
She is survived by her best friend and loving daughter Cheryl (Edward) Kane of Aurora, and her loving sons Jeff (Trudi) Johnson of Plano, IL, David (Kathy) Johnson of Batavia, IL., grandchildren Bridget (Daniel) Damschen of Ft. Benning, GA, Eddie (girlfriend Amanda Ruddy) Kane of Aurora, IL, Sarah Johnson of Casa Grande, Arizona, and Rachel Johnson, Plano, IL and the love of her life, two great grandchildren Daniel, Jr. and Kinley Kay Damschen. Also surviving are her brothers Harold (Pat) Streicher and Alan (Laurie) Streicher, many nieces, nephews and dear friends Ken & Kathy Mozingo and Bruce & Ginny Buhrmaster. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother and sister-in-law William & Marianne Streicher, a nephew Deputy Adam Streicher (End of Watch 3.22.2002).
The family would like to thank Dr. Dave at DMC for her incredible kindness & compassion. Special thanks to June Hamerla, her longtime caregiver, Neighbors Next Door, Elderday Sr. Center and Advocate Hospice.
