Stephan Van Diggelen, age 71, of Wood Dale, IL died on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst, IL. He was born June 10, 1950, in Chicago, Il, the son of the late Lydia nee Van Diggelen Dietz.
Steve attended Maine South High School and graduated in 1968. Though held back as a polio survivor he would not be deterred and remained actively involved in the school athletics program.
He truly loved music, all genres, and his knowledge was impressive if not daunting at times. The shows he saw and bands he experienced are the stuff of folklore.
His love of Chicago sports, and even a few Packer teams, were never far from his conversations. Especially his beloved Cubs who he first saw at Wrigley with an older sister in 1955. His passion was ignited and unwavering and finally fulfilled with the 2016 Championship. He also loved to play golf. Relentless about his game and always trying to shave one more stroke, it was this love of game that he shared with his best friends. At times, ruining many a fine walk on the course, yet sharing more laughs and stories than we could possibly tell, but hope you all relish.
His appreciation for sports was only surpassed by his love of family. If you knew him personally or just via social media you would know he glowed when his daughter and granddaughters were anywhere in view. This love of family was fostered years before in his step sons as he shared every inch of his life with them, and stretched his patience. He may still be missing a few tools to this day.
He is survived by daughter Kelly VanDiggelen and her two daughters Olivia Belanger and Peyton Belanger; two stepsons Matthias (Jill) Lambert their children Braeden and Keira; Brian (Michele) Callahan their children Landon and Chase; three sisters Cindy Dietz, Laurie Dietz, Pam (Tim) Carrico; brother Bob Dietz and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
His friendships were forever, and we are all better for having known him. We want him to be remembered as the story teller, father figure, glowing grandfather, sports lover, and man that would do anything to make a friend smile.
