Robert E. Glenn, 93, of Huntley and longtime resident of Newark, IL. passed Tuesday evening January 16, 2018 at the JourneyCare Hospice in Woodstock. Mr. Glenn was born September 11, 1924 in Mackinaw, IL, the son of Robert I. and Thelma A. (Derry) Glenn. He married Jean Garrett-Glenn April 7, 1946 in Lexington, IL. Jean passed February 6, 1982. He remarried on September 7, 1985 in Joliet to Florine Anderson-Glenn. Florine passed February 8, 2011. He was a life member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association and the American Legion Post 459, AF&AM Comet Masonic Lodge 647, Illinois Valley, Bloomington, IL, Kendall County Retired Teachers and Scottish Rites, Valley of Bloomington (32nd Degree Mason). Mr. Glenn served with the U. S. Navy during W.W. II aboard the U.S. Destroyer Escort. He attended four universities receiving B.S. and M.S. degrees from Illinois State University and an advanced graduate degree from Northern Illinois University and did graduate work at the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He was also certified with the Illinois assessing office. Mr. Glenn was the Superintendent of schools in Newark, IL for 10 years, Administrator at Joliet Junior Community College holding the positions of Project Co-Ordinator to build the new campus, organizer and manager of the personnel office and retired as Dean of Personnel in 1983 after 15 years of service. He was elected to the office of Big Grove Township Assessor in 1986, a position he held for 18 years. Mr. Glenn was also active in the community serving as a Board Member in the Village of Newark, IL, President of the Newark Sanitary District and was Past Commander of the Newark American Legion Post #459 and a member of the Millington United Methodist Church. He is survived by a son, David E. (Joy) Glenn of Huntley, IL.: a step-daughter, Marie Blank of Reno, Nevada; two step sons, Glenn H. (Jacqueline) Selby of Frankfort, IL and Thomas L. Selby of New Lenox, IL; two grandsons, Jonathan Glenn, Joshua Glenn: three granddaughters, Jennifer McCord, Heather Goetz, Melissa Whitaker: many great grandchildren & step grandchildren; a sister Lois (Eugene) Murray of Normal, IL.; a brother, Ralph Glenn of Mattoon, IL. and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wives, Jean Glenn & Florine Glenn; a son, Gregory Glenn; a brother, John Glenn; two sisters, Mary Quinton-Glenn, Dorothy Felker-Glenn and a step daughter, Sharon Ann Selby. A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23rd at the Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home Ltd. 102 S. Johnson St. Newark, IL. 60541-0623, phone 815-695-5131. The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Kirk Scott officiating. Interment will be at the Millington-Newark Cemetery with military honors.
