Richard H. "Dick" Maier, 95, of Aurora and Montgomery, was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at his daughter's home. He was born January 1, 1925 to Henry C. and Ruth I. (McDole) Maier. He graduated from East High School of Aurora in 1943. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy Seabees from 1943 – 1946. He married Jean Johnson in 1948 and they were blessed with 72 years of marriage. He has battled Parkinson's Disease for the past 12 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served as a deacon, a trustee, and on many boards. He managed the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery for over 7 years. He learned the plumbing trade from his father and after returning from the Navy in 1946, he started into the plumbing trade, owning his own business Dick Maier Plumbing from 1956 until retiring from the work he loved doing for over 55 years. He liked participating in sports and watching sports. He bowled in leagues, played softball, ice skated, and enjoyed canoeing. He was the "Granddaddy of the MidAmerican Canoe Race". He participated in the race for more than 25 years, sometimes with his grandchildren. He liked to vacation and visited many states, especially Florida. The motto from the Seabees, "Can Do" was his motto, too. He loved being with family and treasured many gatherings with them. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Jean; his daughters, Susan (Martin) Middleton and Laurel "Laurie" (John) Chally. He is survived by 9 grandchildren. The Middleton children are Marty II (Carol), Kristen (Greg), Emily, Zack, Jed and Melonie. The Chally children are Michael (Kelly), Jay (Nicole), and Becky (Jeromy). He is survived by 4 great grandchildren: Ethan, Addison "Addy", Heidi and Capri Chally (to be born May 28, 2020); and by his brother-in-law, Richard "Dick" Holmes and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his older sister, Mary Jane Stover; and his younger sister, Nancy Holmes. Private graveside services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.
