Richard G. Austin, retired MAJ General (IL), passed away peacefully surrounded by family at home on Sunday, December 4, 2022.
He was born September 20, 1948, in Springfield, IL, son of Otis and Lora nee Dove Austin.
General Austin served in the United States Marine Corps from 1965-1969. He served in the Republic of Vietnam from 1967-1968. He was the adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard before retiring in 1999. Austin served as the United States General Service Administrator under President Ronald Reagan and President George H. Bush. He also served in the Illinois Government under Gov. Jim Thompson, Jim Edgar, and George Ryan.
He is survived by his loving wife Susan C. Austin, daughters T. Beth (Tim) Britt, Tatiana K. Austin and Laurie A. (Mike) Barkdoll; grandchildren Jake (Katie) Thelen, Rachel Thelen, Tyler (Christina) Barkdoll, Zach Barkdoll; nieces Lee Ann Gathard, Bailee Woods, and four great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents and sister Sandra A. Minicher.
A celebration of life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church10 Edgelawn Drive Aurora, IL 60506 on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.
Inurnment will be held privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with full Military Honors under the auspices of the United States Marines and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Shriner Hospital or a charity of your choice in his name.
