IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Reid Kent
Rihel
August 11, 1937 – June 5, 2025
Reid Kent Rihel, age 87, passed away peacefully at his residence in Oswego, Illinois on the 5th of June 2025.
Reid was a war-time US Navy veteran and graduate of Southern Illinois University. He brought kindness and unwavering love toward all who knew him; his laugh and outgoing personality were infectious. Upon graduating engineering school, he began his career at Argonne National Laboratory and went on to spend over 26 years at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. His life's work was dedicated to Fermilab's mission to lead the world in particle physics, and to push the boundaries of our understanding of the universe.
When Reid wasn't at work, you could find him on the side of a mountain volunteering his time as a ski patroller. He spent over 50 years with the National Ski Patrol, serving in both Illinois and Michigan. Sunrises in late October were his passion. Under the camouflage of the duck blind, he stood in constant vigil. Gun at the ready, and call in hand, he was always poised to "chuckle" them in. Those who knew him best understood and embraced the hunter in his heart and soul. Most of all, Reid was a storyteller. He lived his life to the fullest and had a treasure trove of heartwarming stories – which he was never at a loss to reiterate. His love of family and his ability to connect with people was his superpower. His smile lives with the many connections he made throughout his life.
Reid Kent Rihel is survived and missed by his loving wife Jackalyn Rihel, his sister Hope Rihel, and his five children, Vicki Ruwald, Leslie Elstner, Scott Rihel, Kimberly McGraw, and Robert Trinko, as well as 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. We love you Reid, and we will see you again soon.
