Listen to Obituary

Owen Severson passed away unexpectedly on July 7, 2026, leaving behind a family and community who will forever miss his quiet kindness, steady presence, and generous heart. Owen is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Bev Severson née Bryant; his children, Jeff (Katie) Severson, Dave (Kim) Severson, and Jill (Dave) Ashton; and his seven cherished grandchildren, Claire and Carter Severson, Tripp, Kali, Tucker, Trey, and Trent Ashton, who were the pride and joy of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Marcia (Lin) Fite of Round Rock, Texas, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Marie Severson, and his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Bill Hartline, and nephew Joseph Fite.

After graduating from Newark High School, Owen entered the workforce at just 18 years old, beginning a career defined by hard work, dedication, and dependability. Shortly after he purchased his own semi and began cattle hauling, followed by years of working at a gravel pit before transitioning to a career in trucking from which he remained until his retirement in January 2026. No matter where he worked, Owen earned the respect of those around him through his strong work ethic and willingness to lend a hand.

Beyond his career, Owen had a lifelong passion for farming. Whether it was planting in the spring, harvesting in the fall, or tackling chores in between, he was happiest in the field and never passed up an opportunity to climb into a tractor, no matter the season. Farming wasn't just something he did-it was part of who he was. While he worked hard throughout his life, it was never his career that defined him-it was his willingness to help others. If someone needed a hand, Owen was often the first to offer one. He never sought recognition, only the opportunity to make someone else's day a little easier.

Above all else, Owen was a devoted family man. He treasured every opportunity to be with those he loved, whether he was cheering from the sidelines at a grandchild's sporting event, gathering around the table with family, or spending an afternoon sitting in the driveway, talking about nothing and everything at the same time. Those ordinary moments became some of life's most meaningful memories.

Owen appreciated life's simple pleasures-a hot cup of coffee, a sweet treat, and the company of family and friends. He never needed much to be happy, and his humble, genuine nature is exactly what made him so special to everyone who knew him.

Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, the values he lived by-kindness, hard work, generosity, and unwavering love for family-will continue through his children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and never forgotten.

A Gathering will be held on Sunday, July 12th, 2026 at the Newark Lutheran Church 101 East Liberty Street, Newark, IL 60541 from 2:00 P.M. until time of funeral service 5:00 P.M.
