IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Edward
Janis
April 17, 1948 – November 25, 2022
On November 25, 2022, Michael Edward Janis, beloved husband, devoted father, cherished brother, and
much-admired friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.
Michael was born April 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from York High School in Elmhurst,
Illinois in 1966.
Michael earned his B.A. in Education at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.
Michael and Suzanne were married December 4, 1971.
He started his career as a middle school science teacher, and then transitioned into sales and management at Elgin-Honey Hill Corp, Packaging Systems Incorporated, DASI Products, Parmalat, Milk Products of Alabama, and Dean Foods. One of the highlights of his career was his invention of a tomato tray, which is still in use today in the restaurant industry. At the
end of his career, while still working for Dean Foods, his final role was dedicated to maintaining a local
and productive working relationship with an extremely large buyer, McDonald's in Illinois. In some ways,
you can credit Michael with the successful introduction of McCafe products to the McDonald's empire.
Michael bragged often about his stint at McDonald's University where he became one of a few individuals
who could successfully fix a McDonald's soft-serve ice cream machine.
Michael and Suzanne started a family with their first son, Alexander Edward. They would later welcome
four other children, Sonia El, Stephanie Ann, Maximilian Michael, and Stacia Ruth.
Naperville Presbyterian Church became his family's spiritual home and community of fellowship and support.
Following retirement, Michael returned to education to volunteer at Prairie Point Elementary in 3rd and 4th
grade classrooms. He would design hands-on, highly interactive science lessons and experiments to
advance the learning of the students. In November 2016, he was awarded Volunteer of the Month from
Oswego School District 308 for his voluntary contributions.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Walter J. Janis and Eleanor Tobys Janis.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Doris; sons Alexander Edward (Lori) of Oswego, Illinois and Maximilian Michael
(Shaakira) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; daughters Sonia El of Atlanta, Georgia, Stephanie Ann Oltman
(Matthew) of Newnan, Georgia, and Stacia Ruth of Chicago, Illinois; his brothers Dr. Walter G. Janis and
John A. Janis; his grandchildren Ryann, Charlotte, Joshua and Jaxon. He also leaves behind his
much-loved dog, Sugi.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 1, 2022, at 10:30 AM at Naperville Presbyterian

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
