Mary Gertrude Stranckmeyer, age 97, of Aurora, IL, formerly of Sandwich, IL, peacefully passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Jennings Terrance on Aurora, IL.
She was born November 10, 1926 in Quincy, IL, the daughter of Charles W. and Nettie nee Higgins Thornton.
Mary worked for almost 50 years as a hairdresser in her home salon. She was very active as a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk, IL, where she served as an Eucharistic Minister. In her later years, she became a parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church in Oswego, IL, where she was involved in Bible studies and St. Anne Seniors (S.A.S.). In her spare time she enjoyed playing card games, golfing and aerobics. She was a woman on the go and was always ready for a new adventure.
She is survived by her children Janis (Phil) Blatner of Oswego, Joyce (John) DeBernardis of PA, Mary Avram of FL, and Jeffrey Stranckmeyer of Mahomet, grandchildren Peter (Angela), Joshua (Penny), Melissa (Jeremy), Billy (Laurie), Shawn (Kirsten), Adam (Luana), Christopher, Ashley, Kristie (Jeff), Lauren (Aaron), Bobby (Jessica), Joey (Taylor), numerous great-grandchildren, and sister Carol Sue (Jerry) Mast.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth C. Stranckmeyer, sisters Helen, Elizabeth, Patricia, brother Roger Thornton, brothers-in-law Theodore Hollembeak and James Bernhardt and son-in-law Gary Avram.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 14, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at DUNN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME with CREMATORY, 1801 S. Douglas Road, Oswego, IL 60543.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. Anne Catholic Church, 551 Boulder Hill Pass, Oswego, IL 60543.
