Mary Catherine Hughes, age 79, died at home in Naperville, IL, on February 23, 2024.

She was born December 7, 1944, in Woodside, Queens, New York to Patrick and Susan (Ribar) Sullivan.

She married Francis Xavier Hughes on August 21, 1965, after meeting on a blind date. She thought she would get a movie out of the evening, but it was love at first sight. Their 54-year marriage would become a model and inspiration for their children. When Frank became ill in 1998, and for the next 22 years, she managed his doctor's appointments, tracked his medications, and comforted him through the numerous hospital stays. Her love kept him alive, thriving, and enjoying life despite his setbacks.

Mary's dad emigrated from Ireland, and in true Irish fashion, owned a bar over which the family lived. She graduated from St. Michaels High School in Union City, New Jersey. During her life, she worked as an operator for the telephone company, before the kids were born, and as a salesclerk and office manager once the kids were older.

Mary was an avid reader and was very smart, beating every Jeopardy contestant she faced from the comfort of her home. She had a great sense of humor. Mary and Frank loved to spend time with "the CHAs", as they called the group of people they befriended in Woodbridge, New Jersey. The CHAs came together because of their children and became great friends, even as life took them in different directions. She loved to travel, bringing or making friends on every trip,

Mary is survived by daughter Jennifer (Jill) Hughes of Oswego, IL; son Kenneth (Pamela) Hughes of Macungie, PA; two grandchildren, Kathryn Hughes, and Lily Hughes; brother Dennis (Vinnie) Sullivan, sisters-in-law Rose (Michael, dec.) Hughes and Michelle (Jay, dec.) Hughes; as well as many nieces, nephews, the CHAs, and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frank, her parents Patrick and Susan Sullivan, and her brother Paul.

Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

In accordance with their wishes, a memorial celebration for Mary will be held at a later date when they are returned to Cape May, New Jersey, the site of their favorite year together.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
