Lawrence "Larry" J. Winecki, 78, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 16, 2026. Larry leaves behind a legacy of dependability, humor, resilience, and deep love for his family.

Born in Chicago on September 24, 1947, Larry was the oldest of four children and grew up helping in his parents' corner store at the intersection of Wolcott and North Avenue, where he learned the values of hard work and responsibility. A proud American of Polish heritage, he carried those values throughout his life.

Larry graduated from Gordon Technical High School in 1965. As a member of the famed 101st Airborne Division, he served honorably during the Vietnam War, earning a Purple Heart. Though Larry rarely sought recognition for his service, he carried a deep respect for fellow veterans throughout his life. Larry never missed an opportunity to thank a service member for their sacrifice and was known to quietly pay for a soldier's meal whenever he encountered one in a restaurant.

Larry built a successful career in Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery, known for his intelligence, thoroughness, and dedication. After retiring, he volunteered at Rush Copley Medical Center, where he became affectionately known as the "Grandpa of the ER" for his ability to comfort children and bring warmth to difficult moments.

Larry was curious, stubborn to his core, tech‑savvy, and remarkably knowledgeable. He loved movies, detective shows, and sharing what he learned. Above all, he was devoted to his family and took pride in supporting them - always remembering birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

Larry is survived by his loving children, Suzanne "Sue" Hotzel (Franklin), Steven Winecki, and Julie Olczyk (Steve); his cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Mikayla, and Jayden Winecki; and Alex and Anthony Olczyk; his siblings Michael Winecki (Frieda), Virginia Labotka (Dr. Richard Labotka), Edward Winecki (Mary); and his beloved nieces and nephews who knew him affectionately as "Uncle Foo-Foo"-Lauren, Melissa, Kenneth, Thomas, Jeffrey, Erin and Daniel. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and beloved nephew, Kenny.

Larry faced significant health challenges later in life with the same toughness that defined him. His family remembers his strength, one-of-a-kind humor, generosity, devotion, support and above all, his unwavering love.

In keeping with Larry's wishes, he has been cremated, and a private family Celebration of Life will be held in August.
