Kathryn Ellen (Hayslip) Mozingo

June 24, 1942 - November 22, 2025

Kathryn Ellen (Hayslip) Mozingo, 83, of Yorkville, IL, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2025, after struggling several years with crescentic glomerulonephritis, a rare auto-immune disease. She was born on June 24, 1942, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Wilson and Kitty Hayslip. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1964 with a Bachelor of Education Degree and a Bachelor of Home Economics Degree, and she was a member and president of Kappa Delta Sorority. She married Ken Mozingo on August 16, 1964. They moved to New Jersey, and she took an elementary teaching position in Eatontown, NJ.

In 1967, Kathy moved to Illinois with Ken and his position with Bell Labs. She gave birth to her daughter, Kathryn (Kitty) Mozingo, in 1967 and to her son, David Mozingo, in 1969. She took a teaching position with New England Congregational nursery school in Aurora, IL in 1974 and a few years later became the nursery school director at St. Luke's Lutheran in Montgomery, IL. She loved the children and made a positive difference in their young lives. She later felt the call to serve special needs children and started working as a special education preschool teacher with West Aurora School District. She treasured the challenges as a special-ed teacher and the opportunity to make a difference in the children's as well as the families' lives.

Kathy's first priority was her family. She found joy and purpose in raising her two beautiful children, Kitty and Dave, and was a great support for them in their music lessons and their school activities. She loved the family's travels to many of the national and state parks across the U.S., the vacations at Wrightsville Beach, NC, the family's drive through Europe with Kitty and Dave as teenagers, and the special times with granddaughters Abby and Hannah.

When an announcement was made about two Laotian refugee children needing a foster home, Kathy, of course, said "We should do that", and Piet and Kohn Pada joined the family until Piet was 16 and could establish their own home. They still call her "American Mom".

After retiring from teaching, Kathy and Ken volunteered for 12 years as leaders of the Stephen Ministry program at Oswego Presbyterian Church (OPC) where her gifts of empathy and compassion were very evident. In 2013, 2017 and 2020, Kathy and Ken made trips to Kenya to visit OPC's partner church. The Kenya Scholarship Fund was started to help pay school fees for children of low-income families who otherwise would not be able to continue their children's education. Kathy expressed much joy and satisfaction on reports of these scholarships making a difference in so many lives (386 graduated high school, 78 received college/university degrees since 2014).

Kathy had a generous and compassionate spirit which made a very positive impression on all her relations and activities.

Kathryn Is survived by her husband of 61 years Kenneth David Mozingo of Yorkville, Il, their son David Carter Mozingo and daughter-in-law Tricia Farrell (Booth) Mozingo of Sandwich, IL, and their granddaughters Abigail Joy Erb and Hannah Elizabeth Erb and son-in-law Neal Joseph Erb of Waverly, NY. She was predeceased by her daughter Kathryn Lynn (Mozingo) Erb, her sister Mary Susan (Hayslip) McFarland and brother-in-law James Richard McFarland, and her parents Wilson LeGrand Hayslip and Mary Kathryn (Shelton) Hayslip.

A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 10 am -12 noon at Oswego Presbyterian Church, Oswego, IL, and the memorial service followed by a luncheon will start at 12 noon.

In keeping with her generous spirit, Kathy previously decided her body would be donated to the Anatomical Gift Association in Chicago, IL for medical research and education.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like, please donate to the Kenya Scholarship Fund at OPC. You can write a check to OPC with a "Kenya" notation or donate online at secure.myvanco.com/L-Z4E8/home and click Kenya Scholarships.
