It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Karl Howard Michaelson, who passed away on May 12, 2026, at the Arcadia Nursing Home in Morris, Illinois. Born on January 4, 1943, Sandwich, Illinois, Karl lived a life enriched by family, service, craftsmanship, and a love for the simple, enduring joys of life.

Karl was the beloved son of the late Kenneth and Olive (née Olson) Michaelson. He was preceded in death by his cherished siblings, Harold Michaelson, Zelda Schubert, Anna Ballard, Lois Heman, Berdella Stadler, and LeRoy Michaelson, whose memories he carried with him throughout his life. He is survived by his devoted brother, Clifford (The late Alda) Michaelson, who shared many adventures and memories with him. He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews.

A dedicated family man, Karl's heart belonged to his loving wife, Sandra E. (née Weeks), with whom he shared countless memories, laughter, and love. Together, they raised three wonderful children, Karen (Brent) Thomas, Karla (Michael) Gerding, and Kurt Michaelson. Karl's legacy continues through his four treasured grandchildren-Kirsten Thomas, Morgan Thomas, Allison Gerding, and Jake Gerding-who were a constant source of pride and joy. Brother in law Larry (Edie) Weeks and Sister in Law Gloria (Larry) Peterson.

Karl answered the call to serve his country as a member of the United States Army from 1964 to 1966, attaining the rank of SP4E4(T). His time in the military instilled in him a sense of duty and honor that he carried into his civilian life.

After his service, Karl dedicated himself to a career in carpentry, retiring as a proud member of the Carpenters Union Local # 174. His skillful hands and patient mind gave life to countless projects, each a testament to his commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Karl's passions extended beyond his professional and familial roles. He had a remarkable talent for restoring automobiles, tractors, and vintage toys-each restoration a labor of love that breathed new life into cherished relics of the past. An avid fisherman, Karl cherished the peaceful rhythm of casting a line and the thrill of a catch, while his love for race cars fueled his spirit of adventure and curiosity. Karl will be fondly remembered as a man who lived with integrity, generosity, and a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures. His kindness and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews, who will forever hold dear the memories of his warmth and wisdom. May he rest in peace, reunited with those who have gone before him, and may his memory be a blessing to us all.

A visitation for Karl will be held on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 9:30 A.M. until time of funeral service 11:00 A.M. at Helmar Lutheran Church 11935 Lisbon Road Newark, Illinois 60541. Interment will follow with honors at Helmar Lutheran Cemetery 1300 West Helmar Road Newark, IL.
