On Saturday, August 31, the beloved José "Pepe" Núñez Ramos passed away peacefully at Rush Copley in Aurora, Illinois. He was 88 years old and lived in Oswego, Illinois with his children. Born on March 19, 1931 in Barrio Piletas, Lares, Puerto Rico the son of the late Ceferino Núñez and Carmen Ramos and where he graduated from Escuela Mariano Reyes in 1949. He owned and operated a cafe by the name of Pepito's Coffee Shop in Lares. He married Carmen Maria Segarra Lugo in 1952.
Corporal Jose Núñez Ramos was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Panama Canal during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged in December of 1954, he and his wife of 66 years moved to the neighborhood of Humboldt Park, Chicago in 1966 to give birth to their children. He lived humbly, spending the last years of his life working on cars in his garage, attending Mass and riding his bike around the neighborhood. He was well-read, staying up to date with politics, novelas and anything else that piqued his interest. His family and friends knew him as the life of the party everywhere he went with an ability to make a lasting impression on everyone.
He stayed active in his community, always volunteering his treasured 1969 red convertible Chevrolet Impala for the annual Back To School Parade in Chicago which he participated in with his employer Helene Curtis/Unilever HPC USA and retired after 23 years of service. During the warmer summer months, he would blast salsa music from a speaker in the basket of his bicycle as he rode around Oswego. All children from the neighborhood adored him and called him "Grandpa."
