Winton

If Heaven has already organized a welcome celebration, there's little doubt John M. Winton has found the best seat, shared a joke with everyone at the table, and gently reminded the crowd, "Before we eat, let's pray."
John entered the presence of his Savior on June 25, 2026, after a courageous journey with Alzheimer's disease, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, contagious laughter, steadfast love, and countless joyful memories.
John was, by nature, a true introvert-but you never would have guessed it. He had the remarkable ability to light up a room, make strangers feel like lifelong friends, and become the life of the party. While social gatherings quietly drained his batteries, he never let anyone see it until he slipped away to recharge. His laughter was infectious, his sense of humor was legendary, and the twinkle in his eyes often gave away that another joke was on its way.
Above all else, John loved the Lord, and that love overflowed into every area of his life. A faithful member of Central Bible Church in Aurora, he served as church treasurer. It was supposed to be a one-year commitment. Fifteen years later, he was still faithfully balancing the books. Apparently, everyone agreed that once you found someone both trustworthy and willing, you held on to him.
Prayer wasn't reserved for Sunday mornings. It was part of John's everyday life. Family celebrations, birthdays, graduations, holidays, anniversaries-before anyone picked up a fork, John made sure there was time to thank the Lord. His quiet faith spoke volumes, and his example taught those around him what it looked like to walk humbly with God.
John's greatest earthly blessing was his wife, Laura M. (née Hanson) Winton. He loved her faithfully and sacrificially, striving every day to love her as Christ loves the Church. Their marriage was filled with friendship, adventure, laughter, and unwavering devotion. During their thirty-second anniversary celebration, fate brought them face-to-face with the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Naturally, there was only one reasonable response: stop everything and take a picture. Some memories simply demand photographic evidence.
Professionally, John spent many years as a mortgage underwriter for BMO Harris in Naperville, Illinois. He was known for his integrity, diligence, and thoughtful attention to detail. He faithfully served until Alzheimer's disease gradually brought his career to an early close. While the disease slowly stole many memories, it could never erase the love he shared or the impact he made on those who knew him.
John found joy in the simplest moments. After one especially memorable snowstorm, while others were busy shoveling driveways, John built himself a snow throne and proudly ruled his winter kingdom. Every Christmas season, he'd grow his beard just enough to resemble Santa Claus, delighting in the wonder and excitement on children's faces. Making people smile wasn't something he tried to do-it was simply who he was.
To know John was to laugh. Whether delivering one of his perfectly timed jokes, wearing a mischievous grin, or simply raising an eyebrow at just the right moment, he reminded everyone that joy is one of God's greatest gifts. His laughter was genuine, his kindness effortless, and his eyes always reflected the happiness he carried within.
John is survived by his beloved wife of thirty-four years, Laura M. (née Hanson) Winton; his cherished children, Joshua Winton and Grace Winton; his brothers, Frederick Winton and Bill (Denise) Winton; along with extended family, dear friends, and a church family who were blessed by his faith, generosity, and joyful spirit.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Charles and Dorothy Winton, who undoubtedly welcomed him home with open arms.
Although our hearts ache because we miss him, we rejoice knowing John has heard the words he lived to hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant." We can only imagine that Heaven has gained not only another joyful worshiper but perhaps a volunteer treasurer-though this time, we're hoping the term really is just one year.
John's life reminds us that a person can be humble yet unforgettable, quiet yet full of joy, deeply faithful yet wonderfully fun. He showed us that love is best expressed in everyday faithfulness, that prayer belongs at every table, and that laughter is one of God's sweetest gifts.
In honor of John, hug your spouse a little tighter. Pray before the meal. Tell a joke that makes everyone groan. Build something ridiculous after the next snowfall. Grow a Santa beard if you can. And if you ever happen to see the Wienermobile parked along the road, don't just drive by.
Stop.
Take the picture.
John certainly would have.
"Well done, good and faithful servant." - Matthew 25:23
