John Thomas Walker, 76, of Apache Junction, AZ. formerly of Sheridan passed away peacefully Sunday February 19, in AZ. with his loving wife, Peggy by his side.
John was born August 21, 1940 to Herman L. and Hazel J. (Ness) Walker in Big Grove Township, Kendall County, IL. He grew up on a farm in rural Lisbon. He attended, Newark High School before joining the U.S. Navy in 1958, where he proudly served on the USS Ranger. John married his wife of 49 years, Peggy (Thomas) Walker in Aurora IL. on March 9, 1968.
He will be missed by his five children, daughters Gina (Jaime) Portocarrero of Paso Robles CA; Kimberly (Ricky) Grunstad of Marysville WA; Kari (Chris) Benson of Paw Paw IL; sons Troy (Molly) Naggs of Ottawa IL; Darin (Shelley) Naggs of Sheridan IL. along with fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He will be missed by his three sisters, Helen Miller; Pearl (Ray) Lindley; Ruth (John) Eichelberger; one brother Landy (Marie) Walker; one brother in-law Duane Braund and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents: sister Nancy (Duane) Braund; brother in-law Frank (Helen) Miller: father and mother in-law Burrel and Louise Thomas.
John also leaves behind many lifelong friends, especially his coffee shop buddies in Apache Junction AZ. and Sheridan. He truly enjoyed all those good times at the local coffee shops.
John was a long-time member of Carpenters Union Local 195 for over 45 years. He was a member of American Legion Post #27 and VFW Post #9399 in Apache Junction AZ. past member of Plano American Legion Post #395 in Plano, IL.; Moose Lodge #1016 in Sandwich II. and proud member of the NRA.
The last eight years of his life he spent with his wife Peggy enjoying the views of the Superstition Mountains, driving his vintage Cadillac to Tortilla Flats.
A gathering of family and friends will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home Ltd. in Sheridan from noon to 2:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. There will be a luncheon at the Sheridan Methodist Church following the services.
A private burial of cremains with military honors will take place at West Lisbon Cemetery at a later date.
John was a member of Church at The Mount in Goldfield, AZ, where funeral services were held on February 27, 2017
