James Dennis (J.D.) Allen, 92, of Placida Florida, formerly of Sheridan, IL. passed Monday, July 8, 2019 in Englewood, FL.
He was born August 17, 1926 in Harrisburg IL. He was joined in marriage to Mildred Katherine Greenrod on June 20, 1948 in Ledford, IL. They moved to Sheridan in 1952 and he began working at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet Illinois working as a purchasing and processing analyst for 35 years.
Mr. Allen served as Sheridan Grade School PTA President in 1959, organized the Cub Scouts 1960-1966, served on the Sheridan Village Zoning and Planning Commission through the 70's and 80's. He was Mayor of Sheridan (1997-2001). He was most proud of organizing the building of the Veterans of War Memorial in Sheridan's Park, a project he remained involved in until the time of his death.
He is survived by two sons, Jerry (Carol) of Placida Florida: Mark (Shelley) of Canadian Lakes Michigan; six grandchildren, Melissa (Steve) Serby of Ottawa, Carrie (Kevin) Price of Ottawa, Brent (Joanna) Allen of Hartford IL, Marty (Daniele) Allen of Chicago, Sean (Sara) Allen of Warrenville, Brian (Sarah) Allen of Moline; seventeen great grandchildren, Nick, Allen, Jake, Kate Serby, Conner, Carter Price, Chase, Ridley, Arabel, Kalyn Allen, Covin Allen, Harrison, Dylan, Crosby Allen, Oscar, Simon, Anna Allen and a sister Linda Biggs of Harrisburg Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred (Midge)on August 16, 1994; his parents Audie and Ethel Allen; a brother-in-law Don Biggs and a nephew Donnie Biggs.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. – noon, on his birthday, Saturday, August 17th at the Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home Ltd. 333 W. Church St. Sheridan, IL, 60551-0027. Phone 815-496-2003. Following the gathering a committal service will be held at the Sheridan Cemetery followed by a lunch at the Sheridan American Legion Post #729.
