Donald W. Race Sr. went to eternal rest on January 28, 2021 after a long and challenging battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Born August 19, 1942 in Aurora IL, Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who lived every day with a positive outlook and a strong ethical compass for his family, community and service.
The oldest son of Eugene and Edna Race, Don loved to play baseball with the local kids, and spend the weekends camping with his family as a child. He later served in the Vietnam War from 1960-1967 as a member of the Medical Squadron with the 48th Tactical Hospital. Don earned several medals and citations which he was honored and humbled to receive. During the war, he married and was a proud father to Darren and Connie. He later met his soulmate, and spent the next 50 years married to Patricia, and raised William and Donald Jr.
For over 20 years, Don, volunteered with the Oswego Fire Department and retired only after he was able to fight his last fire with his sons Bill and Don Jr. by his side. Don's passion to support his community turned into his life-long career as he continued to work with Kendall County and the Village of Oswego as a community officer, dispatcher, and sat on the Village Board.
Survived by his aunt, Eleanor Cordes; siblings, Mike (Claudia) Race and Sue (John) Kerby; two children, Darren, and Connie Race from his first marriage; his loving wife, Patricia (Corrigan), two sons, William (Maura), and Donald Jr (Charlene) Race; his grandchildren, Ryan, James (Kayla), Abigayle, Kevin, Meaghan, and Brian: four great-grandchildren, Paige, Rauiri, Parker and Raelynn. Don is proceeded in death by his parents, and sister, Sandy.
Don was a devoted husband, father, and avid community member. He loved fishing, traveling, and cooking. He loved spoiling each family member. Don was so proud of his grandkid's accomplishments- he was their biggest fan. He also, loved the day his son, Donnie, spoiled him by presenting him with his Henry Golden Boy Rifle, he was like a kid in a candy store, oh so elated, grinning ear to ear. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Arrangements were entrusted to Dunn Family Funeral Home with Crematory, 1801 S. Douglas Rd., Oswego, IL 60543.
