Deborah Lynn Sabonis of Aurora, IL peacefully passed away in the presence of, and surrounded by, her loving family on Saturday, April 17th, 2021 at Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora.
Deborah, was also known by her family and friends as Deb, Debby, Grandma Debby, Little Debby, and "Bean" as she was often called by her husband of 30 years, Philip Sabonis. She was born in Hillsboro, IL on February 4th,1955 and resided most of her childhood through her young adult years in Sandwich, IL where she graduated from Sandwich High School and met her first husband, John, who was also the father of her three children.
She is survived by her loving husband Phil; Daughter, Christy with Son-In-Law Chris, and her four grandchildren Layne, Mykenzie, Jaidyn, & Gracyn; Son, Stephen; Daughter, Nicki with Son-In-Law Phil, and her four grandchildren Cody, Zachory, Lexy, & Adalynn; Father, Kennard; Mother Peggy; Siblings - Laura, Greg, Kathy, Kerry, Jennifer, & Tim. She was just preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Crabbe just two years ago this month.
Debby was a smart, sweet, caring, artistic, fun, and passionate person that loved hard and played hard! She was a person of many talents and skills that shared her passion and crafts with others. She was a cook, a chef, and/or bartender her entire life, from assisting her parents with cooking for her siblings when she was young, to sharing a love for cooking great food for her children and grandchildren. She began cooking as a career in numerous restaurants and bars, including several years as the daily chef for a number of Monks that resided at Marmion Academy in Aurora. For many years, with her husband Phil, she created and maintained a vegetable garden full of veggies she loved to consume, harvest, and can over the year after the growing season passed. She used her garden-grown food for much of her homemade cooking. She made the best Rhubarb pie even if you don't like Rhubarb! So many canned tomatoes, peppers, and herbs from her garden were also used toward her creation of sauce for the best spaghetti, lasagna, and pizza you'll ever eat.
Debby's favorite personal hobby in all her adult years was to play pool, billiards, with her teams and friends. She has played pool with two teams over the past 13 years, and was playing within a league for nearly 30 years, West Suburban Chicago APA. For many years her goal was set on playing a game in Las Vegas for a Nationals Tournament. This year her team qualified for the first time ever by winning their division tournament and Little Debby was named the MVP during her last play session. She helped her team win the opportunity to play in Las Vegas this coming October. She was so proud of herself and her team! She will be there with her team in spirit this year and cheer them all on from Heaven above!
Deb had hobbies and skills that she shared with others, often volunteering these services with no expectations of compensation as she just loved all she did! She loved kids and spending time with them! Several years ago, she created her own little business of being a Clown for children's parties...she loved to be goofy, have fun with kids, and often was just a big kid herself...or considering her size, was a Little Debby kid rather. She loved to do her own makeup, dress up, and create games and crafts for the kids she entertained! She even did this often for her grandkids and their friends just for fun! An evening of hanging out with the grandkids meant lots of cooking, playing games, creating crafts, or dressing up with pretend play.
Her sewing skills were mostly self-taught and she was extremely creative in her processes. She has sewn her own clothes since her childhood and for her kids when they were young. Deb began sewing more often in recent years again, sharing her skills with her friends for all that was asked of her, including making masks for free to share during this covid pandemic. She grew to become the on-site seamstress to alter all the costumes needed for her grandchildrens dance studio where the dancers became to know her as the sweet lady fixing their costumes in the back room...this room will be dedicated to Deb and will be named her second location "Debby Den." She has her first den in her home where most of the sewing magic happened.
What an amazing artist!! She liked to draw and paint! Lots of painting! Her canvas was often not on paper though...it was on her kitchen cabinets, on the fence around her backyard, on items in and around her garden and house. She would even take furniture from you and turn the pieces from old and used into refinished and colorful. Her passion for art and vibrant colors also influenced her love of gardening. She had beautiful flowers she planted, grew, cared for and loved. Her favorites included roses and sunflowers which are surrounding her house and vegetable garden.
Since Deb was a little girl all the way through her adult life, she was the biggest fan of Walt Disney's "Mickey Mouse." She has collected Mickey Mouse memorabilia and flooded her home with EVERYTHING Mickey, haha! She loved and collected Mickey Mouse items her entire life! She had the opportunity to go meet Mickey at Disney with her grandkids. Deb went on every ride with the kids and had to set up an appointment for the Meet & Greet and photo opportunity with the real Mickey while there! ;) She would more often than not be seen wearing a Mickey Mouse hat, sweatshirt or t-shirt, jacket, purse over her shoulder, and/or anything else you can think of Mickey. Debby was his #1 Fan! In her recent adult years, she began to collect Lennox Crystal items as well, some of which are of Mickey Mouse.

Virtues In Motion Dance Studio: Monetary donations will be put toward the "The Bean Fund" in honor of Deb's husband's term of endearment for her. The Bean Fund will be used to share with a dancer(s) toward costume fees or class tuition for a student(s) that may need assistance monetarily for their participation while taking into consideration the tough times Covid has impacted on its dancers and families. Debby sewed costumes for these dancers, volunteered her time assisting with events, and was one of VIM's biggest fans!
Fox Valley Special Recreation Association: Monetary donations will be provided to FVSRA for any purposes needed within their organization for individuals with special needs. Deborah worked for FVSRA for a short period of time but also volunteered by helping them with their fundraising efforts.
