David Glen Hoffman, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026, at his home in Montgomery, IL. He was 88.

David was born on March 18, 1938, the youngest son of Edward and Mabel Hoffman, and grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He graduated from Glenbard High School (now Glenbard West) in 1956. After high school, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and served in the Army National Guard. He was also a founding member of the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin, IL. For many years, David was a member of the Boulder Hill Neighborhood Church of the Brethren. He was baptized into the Catholic faith in 1992 and attended St. Anne Parish.

For 43 years, David worked for the Burlington Railroad-later BNSF. For most of his career, he supervised commuter rail, retiring as a superintendent at Union Station in Chicago. Keeping the trains running on time was a calling he found deeply rewarding; he rode the first morning train out of Aurora every weekday. He also proudly rode a leg of the Burlington Zephyr to the Museum of Science and Industry.

In service to his community, David was a regular volunteer at Hesed House in Aurora, Illinois, throughout much of his life. Expanding his community service work after his retirement, he volunteered at the Aurora Food Pantry. He donated more than 30 gallons of blood during his lifetime.

David was a passionate advocate and supporter of the performing arts. He reserved his most ardent arts fandom for his children, attending countless band and choir concerts, as well as theater productions at Oswego High School. He was also a loyal patron of the Chicago Lyric Opera.

David loved feeding people, celebrating their successes, and hearing their stories. A perfect meal with David included creative salads, homegrown tomatoes, and a healthy dose of his gentle chuckle as he listened to the boisterous crew around him. David only paused his listening when answering calls of "Dad, Dad" from his Green Bay Packers-colored parrot, Chester.

David is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dr. Sylvia Granger Hoffman; his son Stephen Hoffman (and daughter-in-law, Tara Affolter) of Eleuthera, The Bahamas; his daughter Deborah Hoffman of Fitchburg, WI; his stepson Robert Granger (and daughter-in-law, Jill Granger) of Charleston, SC; seven grandchildren: Mack, Jerry, Danielle, Jesse, Josh, Marie, and Zach; and a great-grandson, Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Lawrence, and his sister Jean Roberts.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026 from 3:00 PM until 7:00PM at DUNN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME with CREMATORY, 1801 S. Douglas Road, Oswego, IL 60543. A Christian Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 10:00 AM at St. Anne Catholic Church, 501 Boulder Hill Pass, Oswego, IL. A luncheon will follow.
