Daniel Richard Smith, "Smitty", age 87, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 surrounded by his family at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, IL. He was born February 13, 1928 in Aurora, IL, the son of the late William Albert and Marie Loretta nee Redden Smith. Daniel proudly served in the Marines from 1946 to 1949. Dan, along with his brother Wally Smith created, owned and operated the Oswego Drag Raceway on Route 34. Prior to retirement in 1992, he worked as a drywaller for Hietkotter. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Oswego, IL. He was a member of the Carpenter's Union Local # 916, enjoyed fishing, gardening and reading. He is survived by his wife Hazel Smith, whom he married on January 31, 1959, children William, Paul (Lily), Trish, Barbara (Tim) Schomer, Jeanine (Brad) Dhesi, grandchildren Chrystal, Dylan, Jacie, Quinn, Luke, great-granddaughter Layla, nephew Steve (Peggy) Smith and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his sisters Virginia, Sister Marie Joyce "Babe", brother Walter and a daughter-in-law Kathy. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 from 4:00 PM until a funeral service at 7:00 PM at DUNN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME with CREMATORY, 1801 S.
