Obituary

Listen to Obituary

With full hearts and deep gratitude for a long and beautifully lived life, we remember Charlotte Irene Gabel, who left this world peacefully in her sleep, on February 12, 2026, at the age of 100, at Bickford of Aurora in Aurora, Illinois.

Charlotte was born on September 9, 1925, in Newark, Illinois, to the late Henry Larson and Marie (née Hanson) Larson. She had one brother, Marion Larson, who passed away before the age of one. Henry and Marie instilled in Charlotte the values of compassion and service. These traits defined her both personally and professionally throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edgar Gabel, who passed away on July 24, 1995. Charlotte and Edgar were married on February 27, 1946, in Newark, Illinois, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication.

In 1960, Charlotte and Edgar took over the family business, Larson-Gabel Funeral Home, which served the communities of Newark and Sheridan. Stepping into a role that perfectly suited their caring nature, Charlotte served as a funeral director and owner, providing comfort and support to countless families during their times of need. She carried forward her parents' legacy while adding her own grace and empathy. Her professionalism and warmth were evident in every interaction, and she was deeply respected by all who knew her.

Charlotte's greatest pride and joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Sandra (Jim) Davis of Newark and Mary (Kevin) Haley of Grayslake, Illinois. She nurtured and guided them with the same compassion she extended to her community.

Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Charlyn (Steve) Martin of Newark, Dr. Colin Haley of Chicago, Gabrielle (Joe) Barracca of Newark, and Bridget (Dan) Organ of Chicago. Charlotte's love also embraced her great grandchildren, James (Trinity) Martin, Evelyn Martin, Stevie Martin, and Kassandra Speerly, all of Newark, and Harry Organ and Georgia Organ of Chicago. Her lineage further extends to her great great grandchild, Finley Martin of Newark. Her legacy will continue to touch generations to come.

Charlotte's greatest joy was her family, found in every hug, every squeeze of the hand, and every loving glance. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness, resilience, and devotion to her loved ones and friends. Her gentle spirit and unwavering faith in the goodness of others inspired all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate a century of life beautifully lived and a legacy that will continue to flourish through the family and community she cherished so dearly. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Bickford of Aurora for their compassionate care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlotte's name to Newark Lutheran Church, reflecting her lifelong commitment to her beloved community.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Gabel Dunn Funeral Home, 102 South Johnson Street, Newark, Illinois which proudly serves both Sheridan and Newark and holds the echoes of her life's work and passion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Newark Lutheran Church, 101 East Liberty Street, Newark, Illinois. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved Edgar and her cherished cats, Gemini and Kit Kat, in eternal peace at Millington-Newark Cemetery.
