Beluse Zidlicky, of Oswego, IL, passed away Friday, May 12 at home surrounded by her loving family. She died peacefully after a long illness. She was born April 21, 1929 in Kozomin, a village in the Central Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. She is the daughter of the late Frank and Antonie (nee Riegger) Ulrich. Beluse escaped Czechoslovakia and the communist regime in 1950 with her family. Her father built a false bottom on a wagon used to haul lumber across the border. Four to five people were able to hide in this space while crossing into Germany.
Besides taking the family her father managed to take others as well, including her future husband, Zdenek. Once in Germany they spent a year and a half in a refugee camp awaiting acceptance from any country. Zdenek emigrated to Canada while Beluse and her family went to the US. In 1953 Beluse and Zdenek were married in Toronto. They moved to the Chicago area and set about raising a family. In 1973, they moved to Oswego IL.
Beluse loved the farm life. She took care of the livestock which included everything from chickens, ducks, goats, sheep and even a llama. She was an excellent gardener who could nurse any plant back to health. Later she enjoyed planting with her sons in the greenhouse. In addition to gardening, she was an excellent cook and baker.
She instilled in her children pride of their heritage. Beluse spoke Czech at home so they wouldn't forget the language. She supported her children and grandchildren's participation in the Czech organizations.
When Beluse became a Grandmother she became everybody's "Babi" which is how most people knew her. She was a strong and loving woman who lived an amazing life.
Beluse is survived by her daughter Zdenka (Rocky) Sohrabi of Oswego, sons Zbynek Zidlicky and John (Karen) Zidlicky of Oswego.
