"Obituary lovingly written by her family"

Alyce Gelene Carroll Freeman Geiger May 28, 1927 - May 21, 2023 AURORA — Alyce Gelene (Carroll) Freeman Geiger passed away peacefully on May 21, 2023. Gelene was born in Selma, Iowa on May 28, 1927, the daughter of William Keith Carroll and Bertha Christine (Heger) Carroll. Gelene was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Royce and Richard Carroll and her husbands, Robert Lee Freeman, and John (Jack) Kenyon Geiger. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in Ottumwa, IA. She attended Anderson College (University) in Anderson, IN. She met and married her husband, Robert Freeman while attending Anderson College. She raised her three children across the street from the college and attended Park Place Church of God. Gelene had a very unusual nickname. To her closest friends, she was "Jughead" or "Jug". It was a term of endearment. Most everyone in Anderson called her by that name. If you addressed her as Jug, she knew you as a dear friend. Gelene opened her home to family, friends, high school and college students and cooked numerous meals for her frequent visitors to her home. She made her hospitality look easy, but we know the hours that she put into serving and loving her guests. Grammie, as she was known to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was an excellent grandmother and great grandmother ... always encouraging and kind to all her grandchildren. She baked cookies and loved working hundreds of puzzles with all of them. She found great joy in the hugs of all these young children. Gelene will be remembered for loving unconditionally and sending a word of encouragement to each of her family when they needed it most. She could handle any situation with grace and love. She was the finest example of a mom and mom-in-law that anyone could ask for. Her legacy is the family she leaves behind who are forever grateful for her love and devotion. We are blessed by her fine example of a life well lived. Gelene is survived by her three children: Rodney (Rod) Lee Freeman and his wife Dinah of Brentwood, TN; Gregory (Greg) Alan Freeman Sr. and his wife Penney of Tampa, FL; and Rhoda Ann Freeman Courtney and her husband David of Oswego, IL. She has seven grandchildren: Kelly Christine Freeman Davis (Scott) of Ocala, FL; Robert Clinton Freeman (Adrienne) of Franklin, TN; Richard Lee Freeman (Meg) of Franklin, TN; Gregory Alan Freeman II (Jessica); Wade Courtney (Kate) of Bella Vista, AR; Logan Courtney (Alex) of Chicago and Luke Courtney (Samantha) of Oswego, IL. She has thirteen greatgrandchildren: Haley, Caroline and Lauren Davis of Ocala, FL; Charlie, Ellie, Miles and Henry Freeman of Franklin, TN; Wells and Gray Freeman of Franklin, TN; Gregory Alan III and Catherine Grace Freeman of Cicero, NY; Elijah and Elsie Courtney of Oswego, IL., Leonard Courtney of Chicago, IL and Theodore Courtney of Belle Vista, AR.
