Obituary for Michael Don Smith

MICHAEL DON SMITH

On September 22, 1953 a red-headed, brown eyed boy was born to Shirley (Felts) and Levi Donald Smith at the Air Force hospital in Greenville, Mississippi. Michael Don Smith was the first child born to his parents. As the family grew to include three daughters and another son, Mike welcomed the siblings and cherished his role of protective older brother. He always reminded his younger sisters and brother that he was the “big brother” as he gave each one a big bear hug.

A tragic car accident when Mike was four years old left him mentally and physically disabled. From that point on, although he was never able to walk or care for himself, never able to go to school or marry, he did not stop being a shining example of Christ-like behavior to everyone who knew him, telling everyone who would listen about the faithful God he served. He was a hero to many, exhibiting patience, courage, love and a wonderful sense of humor to all the people with whom he came in contact.

Mike liked to tease others. He was proud of the fact that his teasing habits had been handed down to him from his grandfather, Levi A Smith and his father Levi D Smith. At Willowcrest Nursing Pavilion, where he resided the last five years of his life, many affectionately addressed him as “trouble”. He loved it.
Although Mike had little of what the world would describe as wealth, he always was concerned with the needs of others and gave in his own way. For many years he collected aluminum pop tabs to send to the Ronald McDonald House because of his heart of compassion for little children who were ill. St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was one of his favorite charities and he selflessly spoke to young people at schools, becoming a living testimony of the need for wearing seat belts. His handicaps did not stop him from using his life and experiences to make a difference.

On June 22, 2019 at the age of 65 years, Mike was greeted in Heaven by his father, Levi D Smith and his sister, Beverly J Buss as Jesus released him from his broken earthly body to clothe him in his perfect, eternal body and called him to the home He had prepared for him.
Other family members who predeceased him were his paternal grandmother and grandfather, Levi and Gracie Smith, maternal grandparents James and Cleffie Felts, beloved aunts, Laverne Byers, Verba Kellett and Delphia Smith, uncles, Thelbert Smith and Lloyd Byers, and cousins, Kerry Kellett, W.D. Smith and Martha Yates.

Left on earth to await their reunion in Heaven are his mother, Shirley (Felts) Smith, sister, Deborah (Michael) Johnston, brother, Ron (Annette) Smith, sister, Kelley (Patrick) Lloyd and brother-in-law Mike (Heide) Buss. Also remaining are nine nieces and nephews, Brooke (Jim) Guddendorf, Jacob (Sara) Buss, Joshua (Tina) Buss, Benjamin Johnston, Matthew Johnston, Danielle Smith, Beverly Lloyd, Marc Smith and Dakota (Trent) Beatty. Great nieces and nephews are: Emma, Ethan, Noah, Harper, Levi and Loretta.

A celebration of Mike’s life and God’s faithfulness will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, 15801 Rt. 59, Plainfield, IL on July 6, 2019. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with funeral following at 11:30 a.m.

Those who wish to honor Mike’s memory may consider contributing to his favorite charities, St Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Samaritan’s Purse.
