Obituary for Hugh Richard Pierce

Hugh Richard Pierce – “Dick” to his friends – died at home in the Chicago area on Monday, November 18, 2019. Dick was born in 1946 to Charles Milton Pierce and Jean Marie Shillady in Detroit, Michigan. He was one of seven children: Carol, Mary, Chuck, Peggy, Kelly, Patty.

Dick was drafted into the US Army in 1969 and served in Vietnam. While earning his business degree from Oakland University, he began his professional career working for the family business. The John Miller Electric Company was an industrial contractor to the Big Three automotive plants.

In 1970 Dick married his high school sweetheart Kathy and had two children: John and Stephanie. Dick was very proud of his children, especially as wonderful parents. John married Kim, parents to Anna and Carter. Stephanie married Geri Brandimarte, parents to Kathleen and Emma.

After his divorce, and 15 years later, Dick met Rhonda Bauerle in the Chicago office of Fischbach & Moore Electrical Contractors where he served as Midwest profit center manager. Dick was older than Rhonda. Their romance surprised them both. In 1994, after two dates, they married three months later. Their love affair lasted for 25 years, until the day Dick died. Dick wrote hundreds of love letters to Rhonda. Each letter began with these words… To my most beautiful, precious bride, my wife, my best friend and lover and the caretaker of my heart, hopes and dreams.

Although Dick had a debilitating heart condition that forced him into early retirement, he was happy to support Rhonda’s career any way he could. He occasionally accompanied her on business trips, meeting her many industry friends and colleagues. He learned to make the most of time spent at quilt and sewing events. When Rhonda was out of town on business trips, she called Dick every night to share their day over the phone.

November 15 & 16, Rhonda taught at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Novi, Michigan. While Rhonda was attending the show, Dick was delighted to spend two wonderful days with his children and grandchildren. They enjoyed an impromptu early Christmas on Saturday night. Sunday on the return drive to Chicago, Dick remarked that the time with his family was perfect.

Dick died in the comfort of his home. He left this world with love in his heart, a kick in his step and wit upon his lips. ❤
