Obituary for Aimee J. Jonassen

AIMEE J. JONASSEN
July 31, 1957 - February 7, 2020

Aimee Jean Jonassen, 62, of Newark passed Friday, February 7, 2020 at her home.

Aimee was born July 31, 1957 in Mendota to Raleigh M. & Louise M. (McMaster) Shifflette.

She was a 1975 graduate of Serena High School and had received an associate degree in criminal justice from I.V.C.C. She was joined in marriage to Paul Jonassen on April 19, 1986 in Ottawa. She had worked at many jobs since a teenager, starting in restaurants, later as a special needs school bus driver for Ottawa Elementary Schools, salesclerk and finally store manager for Sally Beauty Supply in Aurora & Ottawa.

She was a member of the Newark Lutheran Church and had served at times as a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. Her faith in Christ was very strong and had been certified as a lay speaker for the Methodist Church, serving those duties at several local churches. Aimee was the first female president of the Ottawa Jaycee’s and was very proud of her work, and others, in keeping the Christmas painting in Washington Park. Her travels with Paul were a highlight of her life. She was so proud of hiking down the Grand Canyon and camping through the Rocky Mountains. In the past 20 years she loved the many vacations to Huatulco, Mexico and at exactly 25 years after their marriage, on the minute they exchanged vows overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

She is survived by her husband Paul; her son, Jonathan (Jennifer) Jonassen of Earlville; her cherished granddaughter, Kegan Jonassen; two sisters, Rosemarie Harer of Ottawa; Cathy Norem of West Fargo, ND; a brother, Raleigh (Marilyn) Shifflette of Mendota and her companion support dog Florence.

Aimee was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother Bill Shifflette; a sister Karen Freschi-Applebee and her first rescued dog, Beauregard.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 at the Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home Ltd. in Sheridan. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Newark Lutheran Church with Pastor John Benson officiating. According to her wish, cremation will be accorded and inurnment of her cremains will be on a later date at the Precinct Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, Andrew Freschi, Scot Freschi, Brandon Myers, Mike Jonassen, Jim Jonassen and Shane Jonassen.
